Hope to Be Out of Hospital Today -- Mon., Sep.24

Feeling marginally more human. Will most likely get discharged today and head back to San Antonio. Here's the lovely Susan...At least I can open my eyes now, but lots of swelling. Can't smile, jaw is banded shut.

My greatest thanks to Bob for being here with me. He is such a wonderful man and such a support. He has been so worried and so thoughtful and so loving. Our 30 years together has been full of all kinds of things, but this is by far the worst.

I'm so happy I can count on you, Bob, through everything.

Thank you to my relatives and friends who have sent such great messages. It means a lot to me.

The trauma doctor just came in and I am being released this afternoon. My lunch of clear liquids is here so I will eat now.

Thanks for checking in.

Susan

  1. Glad to hear you're headed home today! I would say enjoy your lunch but I know better, having been there, done that recently . . . If I never see, smell or taste chicken broth again . . :)

    1. Amen to that...chicken broth, beef broth, iced tea, apple juice. They served me jello at every meal. Have you ever tried to get jello between banded teeth when your lips are so sore and swollen you can't even drink out of a straw? Crazy. It only worked if the jello wasn't set very well, otherwise forget it!

    1. Yeah. What can I say? I mean, I have tripped before but usually catch myself or fall with a little grace...not this time, however. I guess I made up for all the graceful falls.

  5. All the walking you have been doing will probably help you heal faster because you are healthy. Get well soon!

    1. Working on the quick part. The maxillofacial surgeon did not put plates in my face because he says bones heal faster with blood flow to them. Here's to that!

  6. I don't know what to say, when I showed Woody your pictures of your face, I reminded him about all the times he's told me to quit putting my hands out to soften the fall.
I manage to break my wrist/hands - but have never hit my face. I think a broke wrist wins out over what you're going thru.

Let Sunnie and Bowie cuddle around you and rest. Oh Bob an cuddle also. Take care and get well soon.

    1. Yes, I know what you mean about wrists, my mom has broken her wrist a couple of times: once falling roller skating and once on a fall when walking. I would have much rather broken my wrist!

Sunnie is a love and slathers me with kitty attention, including whapping my face with his tail (ouch). Bowie on the other hand doesn't know what to think. He has come up close to my face twice and turned tail and left.

Bob cuddles me as much as he can, but I'm currently sleeping in the recliner so I can be upright. This is really hard on Bob too.

  7. Oh my gosh Susan, Been off line a couple of days & just got back on & pull up your picture. How horrible, so so sorry. You're going to be skinny for your Australia trip. Stay strong & heal quickly! Again, so sorry you are hurting so bad. Lynn

  9. I've got a good recipe for a protein shake, if you need it. It's good that you are going home where you can heal faster. The kittys will help by giving you lots of love and laughter.

    1. Hey Susan. I'll take the recipe for a protein shake if it doesn't have dairy products in it. Dairy causes me lots of phlegm which isn't a good thing right now.

I do like the kitty love, but can't laugh or smile because it hurts too much.

  10. I never would have thought that a full face helmet would be a good idea for the simple act of crossing the street!
I just happened to slide on by here and have been reading about your ordeal.
    Truly... amazingly... *bad*.
I had a knot in my stomach the whole time! It's an odd thing (best word I can come up with) to feel bad for a complete stranger. I'm so very sorry.

To think, my wife took a tumble outside our house a few years back just crossing the road. Now I know it could have been so much worse for her. She banged up her knee a little...

Best wishes for a speedy and uncomplicated recovery.

    1. You know, hindsight is 20/20...but a full-face helmet for walking? Who would have thought. I told Bob now I know how some of those football players feel. OUCH!!

  11. We've had a slow connection so I'm just catching up on reading blogs. So sorry to hear about your accident. It is amazing how your life can change in just a brief instant. Hope you mend quickly.

  12. It's good to see your eyes again!! You're young and strong, you'll heal up in no time!! Just think...by the time you get to Australia you'll be super skinny from this new all liquid diet!! I heard it's all the rage... ;) Hang in there girlie. Here's to you and a speedy recovery!! Cheers!!

    1. Thanks, Kristy! Almost 60 years young! Go, Susan. LOL.

About that diet...it's not all it's cracked up to be. Now liquid hot fudge, on the other hand.

It would be nice to lose a few pounds before Australia, but this wasn't how I pictured doing it.

    1. It feels so good to be relaxin' in the Rig. Ahhhh. No more needle sticks for blood draws, no more I.V. drip, no more blood pressure cuff, no more being awakened at 4:30 a.m., and then every hour after that, even though you didn't go to sleep until 1:00 a.m. because you were pondering your place in the universe and what the he** happened to it.

  15. Sorry to hear about "breaking your face" I just read the post about what happened. Glad to know you are getting better.

My family and I will be camping in the San Antonio area soon. We were wondering if you had any recommendations for great campsites.

    1. What kind of campsites are you looking for? Woods? RV Resort? Small? Large? Bird-watching? Lake?

      How close to San Antonio?
