Someone Close the Freezer Door! - Thurs., Jan.24

Last night it felt like someone left the freezer door open, then turned on a power blower to make sure we had the full effect of the cold. And we're in South Texas. Can't even imagine what people in the North and Northeast are experiencing. I've heard the temps up north feel like -40° with wind chill.

Here's what we woke up to in San Antonio this morning...

Ice coated our 5th wheel.
And The Beast

Spigot dripping + 35 mph wind = ice art
Close up of ice art in the grass.
In the two photos above you can see the effect of leaving our water spigot dripping all night combined with 35 mph wind gusts. The water sprinkled out over the grass creating "ice art."

Ice box effect.
The above photo shows how I had to dress up to "run the park" this morning. Running the park means taking the golf cart (with no side windows) to see if our guests checked out by 11:00 a.m. Temperature was 30 degrees.

Because our freeways were closed due to ice on bridges and overpasses in San Antonio, a rally staying in our park couldn't leave by 11:00 a.m. (of course no one was coming in either).

The rally's Wagonmaster headed out around noon to scope out the roads. The roads must have opened by 1:30 p.m. because about 18 RVs pulled out in staggered groups of three or four starting around that time.

(Note: The people who REALLY deserve credit in our park during the freezing weather are our maintenance guys who go out to repair broken pipes, disperse puddles of water with a blower, unblock sewers, rake up leaves, and clean up broken branches, as well as the guys who pump propane. Thank you, thank you, thank you!)

Tonight's temperature is predicted to be 30°. Then it warms up for Saturday and Sunday. On Monday night another cold blast is coming that is predicted to last until Thursday, Jan. 30. No forecast beyond that for now. I look forward to more normal winter temps of 60-70 degrees.

As usual the fur-kids are adorable. Here they are...

Such snuggle-buns.
Time for some serious grooming.
It's getting cold in here. Must trundle off to bed.

Travel Bug chillin' out.

  1. That looks very cold. It's even cold here in Florida this year.

    1. We've heard that from campers passing through here. Seems no one is spared except maybe California.

  2. We didn't have ice or snow here in Port A ... but it sure blew strong enough to buffet the rig overnight on Thursday ... and yesterday never got up from freezing ... the windchill was brutal.

    1. Thankfully nothing was damaged in your wind or our ice. Today was a much nicer day and tomorrow is supposed to be in the mid-70s! Talk about roller-coaster temperatures! We've got 'em.

  3. All maintenance golf carts should at least have windshields. I can remember how bitter the wind was on my face while I drove through the park in Missouri heading to the net maintenance job. And when it is misting rain, the mist felt like pins pricking my face.
Hope the cold stays away for February. Carol and I will be at Hidden Valley for the month of February. I'll give you a shout when we get there.

    1. The golf cart had a windshield, but no side or back windows. When I ran the park my face got so cold it turned bright red. I stopped at our 5er and picked up a scarf to wrap around my face and neck.

Please let us know when you're in San Antonio area. We should be able to find a get together time in a whole month!!

    1. You all reign supreme in low temperatures. Bet you're all cozy in front of the fireplace with the doggeroos.

  6. We are in Houston and experienced the same thing yesterday. The park turns our water off when it gets below freezing. We have had to do this four times so far this year and Tuesday night is not looking good. I think I need to go to Florida next winter. LOL

    1. Our park turns the water spigots on a slow drip. However, a number of people in the park left their hoses attached and we had a few broken pipes and sold some new hoses in the morning.

  7. Don't you just love "Global Warming"? Thank goodness it's not "Global Cooling"...

Love that outfit, just wondering if you'd be able to get up if you fell down? ;c)

    1. Hey Paul and Marti...you'd think the glaciers would be advancing this year, not retreating. It certainly FEELS like "Global Cooling."

I have no intention of falling down ever again. But if I did fall in that get-up, I think I'd be well padded.

  8. Thank goodness these cold snaps don't last long in the south whether you are in Texas, Arizona, or Florida.

    1. Hey Colleen, yep glad they don't last long, but I could sure use more nice warm days in between these cold snaps! I see we're in for more of the same next week. Could even have sleet/freezing rain again. Wheeeee..

  9. That looks really cold for San Antonio. It even snowed in Baton Rouge yesterday. Here in Virginia, it's bitter cold. . . 30 degrees seems like a warn sunny day. The weatherman said we'll have another month of this. Yipes!

    1. Kittie, It is very cold for San Antonio/South Texas. Looks like we're in for more of the same next week. Hard to believe most of the north, east and south U.S. are getting such Arctic air. Stay safe and warm. You've been getting slammed over there.

    1. We want sun, we want sun (and warmth). Let's start a movement and see if we can get some warmer temps! Ha ha.

Gotta love the fur-kids. Hey, they keep us somewhat warm. As Bob says, "Just throw on a few more cats!"

  11. Looks as though we got out of south Texas just in time. Hope you are warming up by now.

  12. I would think the broken pipes would be a huge issue there in that kind of weather. We are used to freezing temps and this year our area has been having pipes freeze. Another blast of cold air is moving through Kansas tonight (Sunday) and taking temps down to 3 degrees and tomorrow to 1 degree....it looks like that cold front is heading your way.

  13. It got pretty cold in Rockport too and these oak trees were swaying pretty good. I'm glad it didn't freeze. We have a reservation beginning of Feb at Canyon Lake for a few day. Hoping for warmer weather. Keep that cold weather at bay :-)
