Italian Social with Jerry and Carol - Mon., Feb. 10

A few days ago we were contacted by fellow bloggers Jerry and Carol of Waggin Tails RV. They are working at Hidden Valley RV in Van Ormy, just south of San Antonio. After a brief email chat, dinner was on the menu agenda. Monday evening worked out to be a good time to eat meet.

Italian sounded good (especially to us because we tire of eating Mexican food...AGAIN). Options were Macaroni Grill and Zio's Italian Kitchen. Zio's is in the area; Jerry and Carol had never eaten at Zio's so that's where we went.

As is the case in most instances of RV bloggers meeting other RV bloggers, we chatted and chatted around mouthfuls of food. We love that Jerry and Carol used to work with miniature show llamas in northern Georgia. While they worked there, we followed their blog and learned about their charges. Adorable pictures of llamas were in almost every post. They are full-time workampers (RVers who travel and work, like us).

The food we ordered went something like this: Chicken Piccata, Chicken Parmesan, Chicken Pomodoro, and Strawberry Salad. (Which of these isn't like the rest?) Bob was the healthy one who chose salad. The food was enjoyable, but instead of serving our salads first, we had to ask for them when they brought our entrees. Oops! Someone fell asleep at the wheel. The service could have been better. After we'd been there two hours, we had to ask for our checks. And then I forgot to take my to-go box. No yummy left-over chicken pomodoro tomorrow.

We love making new friends, especially honest-to-goodness, down-to-earth, friendly folks. Carol loves being indoors, quilting, reading, being with their dogs and cats. Jerry enjoys being outdoors, woodworking, and enjoying nature. I wish we had time to get together again while they're here, but our schedule is packed to the gills until we head out on the road Feb. 22 to Las Vegas.

As for the rest of my day...I worked 7-1/2 hours as office assistant at a State Farm Insurance office in north San Antonio. I'll be there again tomorrow.

A few days ago, before it got frigid again, we put bird seed out and I swear the birds know cold is coming. We had eight white-winged doves on the feeder at once and sparrows pushing in underneath them to get to the seed. It was a bird feeding frenzy and, once again, we have very chilly temperatures in South Central Texas. Low tonight will be 37 (with wind chill will feel like 29); tomorrow night 31 degrees.

In the following photo of the male Northern cardinal, I love how he's fanning out his tail. Unfortunately, I cut his head out of the photo.

In the next two cardinal photos, you can clearly see which way the wind is blowing!

Thanks for reading. Enjoy the rest of your week.

  1. Great pictures of the cardinals! I'm always envious of people that can get pictures of birds. They move so fast for me all I usually end up with is a close up of my thumb! :c(

    1. You have to take a lot of photos to get a few good ones, that's for sure. Also, it's advantageous to have a bird feeder right outside the window. Captive audience.

  2. So nice meeting other rvers. Speaking of that, how long will you be in Vegas? We are at Lk Mead just outside Boulder City. Maybe we can meet up. Let me know. Joan

    1. Yes, we definitely want to meet. In fact do you know of a good campground with water/electric hookups in your area? Not a fan of the over-crowded, over-priced RV parks in Las Vegas and don't like dealing with the madding (or is that maddening?) crowds. We plan to arrive around Wednesday, Feb. 26 or Thurs. the 27th. We are in a 34' 5th wheel with a Ford F350 crew cab. Our plans are to spend time with both our families Fri.-Mon., but should be free to hike/sightsee Wed/Thurs. Let us know if you have any ideas on campgrounds and what your schedule is like.

  3. Oh how fun! That's wonderful you got to meet up and have dinner and visit. And what cute little birds. I love those last two with his feathers just a little ruffled from the wind. Hope yall are staying toasty warm inside tonight! It's dipping low here as well. Whew this winter!

    1. We love meeting people as we travel or people who travel to San Antonio. A lot can be learned sitting down to talk: good places to see, places to stay, places to avoid. Plus we make new friends.

Birds are fun to watch and interesting to read about. Plus there are always surprises as birds show up in unexpected places, for example, the long-eared owl that was in San Antonio for a few weeks.

My fingers are crossed that the worst of winter is behind us. This week our temps are supposed to go up into the high 70s!

    1. True, they usually do. However, it was a Monday night and I don't know if they had trainees working or what. We're not going to stop eating there, because we like it.
