Leaving Vicksburg, Next Stop Montgomery, Alabama - Thurs., May 4, 2017

Before we hooked up our 5th wheel to leave Vicksburg, we stopped at Navy Circle overlooking the Mississippi River and Ameristar Casino. Navy Circle was the southern anchor of the Union siege. A cannon mounted here prevented Confederate soldiers from leaving the city. I'm glad we stopped, there's a fantastic view of the Mississippi River from here.

After our brief visit here, we hooked up the 5th wheel and took off for Montgomery, Alabama. We drove straight through, only stopping at two rest areas along the way. If we wanted one of the few remaining walk-in sites at Gunter Hill COE Campground outside Montgomery, Alabama, we were told we needed to be there by 3:30 p.m.

Along the way, we had mostly good weather until we caught up to a line of squalls in Alabama. It must have rained pretty hard as we saw a number of cars off the road and a couple of accidents. The rain dumped on us pretty hard a couple of times on our trip east.

When we arrived at Gunter Hill COE campground, they had two back-in sites available. Woo hoo! One thing about COE campgrounds is that their sites are usually huge. We had no trouble backing into our site. This COE campground has full hook-ups in their newer Catoma Loop. We love our site. Just don't let us have any big winds kick up. We are in the middle of lots of trees and some came down recently near our site.

Lovely site - very large
Staying in tonight. Tomorrow we will do the Montgomery, Alabama, state capital Volksmarch.

  1. We have stayed at both places - Ameristar Casino campground in Vicksgurg and Gunter Hill COE park. We thought Ameristar in Vicksburg is a very good stop along the way for us and the GH COE park may be one of the very best we have stayed in. Great photos!
