Fly Like an Eagle and Movie Review - Fri., May 23

Tomorrow afternoon I am leaving on a jet plane for Portland, Oregon. Pretty excited to see family and friends again.

I am going to miss Bob and the kitties while I'm away. He's going to miss me too. I love you, Bob.

On Wednesday, seeing a movie sounded like a good thing to do. I went to an afternoon showing of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." The movie was very good, but extremely over the top in regards to Jamie Foxx's character, Electro. The heroes, villians and fight scenes become more and more preposterous. (Who can develop the baddest bad guy and chew up, i.e., destroy, the most scenery in movie?) This movie comes close to winning the prize on that front with the big finale between Spider-Man, Electro and The Green Goblin (Harry Osborn).

In flashbacks, we learn about Richard Parker (Peter Parker's dad), what his dad was working on, and what happened when he and his wife disappeared. Oscorp plays a big role in this film. We also learn Harry Osborn's (Peter Parker's childhood friend) backstory.

This movie contains many characters and story arcs from the Marvel Spider-Man cartoon universe. This movie is tying together threads from the previous movie and setting the storyline for the next three movies. The stars come out for this movie: Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Sally Field (Peter Parker's Aunt May),  Emma Stone (Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's girlfriend), Jamie Foxx (Max Dillon/Electro), Cole DeHaan (Harry Osborn/Green Goblin), and Paul Giamatti (Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino). I found the director's name to be quite apropos and humorous: Marc Webb. Running time is almost 2-1/2 hours. I rate it 3.5 stars out of 5.

Upcoming Travel - Thurs., May 22

Let me start off by saying we moved today. Since we will be in San Antonio for a couple more years, we now have a permanent site at our RV park. In the two years we've lived here this is our 7th site in the park. It's hard to move into a long-term site here, but now we have one. The only time we'll need to move is when we go on one of our get-aways.

Speaking of which, I will be flying to Portland, Oregon on Saturday to spend 1-1/2 weeks with family and friends. Bob will be staying in San Antonio to work and hold down the fort. I plan to stay with mom, see my son, Mike; my brother and his wife, Gina; and my sister, Jan, along with numerous friends.

Usually we plan a trip to the coast and we'll do some walking and hiking. We may be heading to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington on Memorial Day weekend to see my brother at his lake property there. (We'll be checking the weather before we go. If it's going to be miserably rainy, we may skip the 3-1/2 hours of driving each way.)

My sister is planning a pinochle party for May 31. That's always a blast. Usually there are three tables and a potluck. We play for close to four hours.

I return to San Antonio on June 4, am home for ten days, then my friend Susan and I will start our driving trip to Oregon for the Columbia Gorge Biennial Classic Volksmarch Weekend. Along the way there and back, we will be walking state capitols (Phoenix, AZ; Carson City, NV; Sacramento, CA; Salem, OR; Boise, ID; Salt Lake City, UT; and Santa Fe, NM) and seeing caves, national parks and national monuments. Really looking forward to a road trip!!

Again, Bob will be working and holding down the fort here in San Antonio. Thank you, honey, for taking care of the home front. I appreciate you so much!

September 22, Bob and I leave on a 6-7 week road trip. Destination: Wisconsin and Michigan. We will head up through Wisconsin to see the area where his relatives lived many years ago, continue up through Iron River and Marquette, Michigan, to see the towns where our fathers grew up, spend a couple of weeks in the upper peninsula for fall colors and waterfall hikes, then drop down to the Chelsea/Ann Arbor area where we will spend a week meeting my aunts, uncles, and cousins whom I haven't seen since I was a child.

In 2014, we are be making up for our lack of travel in 2013. Woo hoo!
