Canyon Lake Sunday and Chillin' on Monday - Mon., June 30

As with any vacation it takes a couple of days to decompress and get back into the normal rhythm of life. Friday, I spent time organizing photos and unpacking, plus I wrote one blog.

Saturday, I was able to write three blogs. We took a quick drive out to Random and then drove back home.

Yesterday (Sunday), Bob wanted to go for a drive. We packed up some snacks and water and headed to Canyon Lake. We wanted to take a look at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds. Our route took us up I-35 north from San Antonio to FM 306 out of New Braunfels to Canyon Lake Dam.

From Overlook Park, we tried to drive through two Corps of Engineers campgrounds; however it wasn't to be. The lady was very unfriendly at the first campground's gate (first time we've had that experience). We were told no drive-throughs of the campground except Monday through Thursday. That doesn't work too well for us because we work in San Antonio during the week. So, scratch that idea.

We continued on FM306 to US 281 north and decided to check out Blanco State Park. What a lovely location along the Blanco River. When I went to show our Texas State Park pass to the ranger station, I found out it had expired in May. Oops. Immediately bought a new one because we love to go to Texas state parks!

Blanco State Park is known for its swimming holes and fishing. The river is stocked with trout and many people were enjoying the day fishing. Those that weren't fishing were swimming and picnicking. We spent a few minutes in the bird blind to see what fauna were around midday.

On our way home, we stopped at H-E-B for fresh peaches and visited the deli. I had a turkey croissant sandwich and Bob chose a salad.

We had fun exploring today and will probably return to Blanco State Park to swim. It wasn't nearly as crowded as some of the swimming holes we've been to. There were actually lots of parking spaces left.

Today, I'm chillin' in the air-conditioned 5th wheel.

Have a good week everyone.

  1. Great header picture. I'm very surprised at such a rule at COE parks. I've always loved them. The state park sounds like a great way to cool off.

    1. Thank you on the header photo.

We've also enjoyed COE parks, so we were surprised by the rule. We just drove the Escape and weren't trying to visit anyone in the park. Oh well.

  2. You are right. After any vacation it does take a while to organize, unwind and get ready to go again.

    1. Yeah, it's nice to take a few days off. Our next long vacation will be late September/October to Michigan and we'll be taking the 5er.

  3. We spent a month at Blanco State park on two occasions. Blanco has a great little museum and the best Lemon Meringue pie ever at the 9-pin bowling alley cafe (the meringue is 6-8" high!). BTW, I think the red bird is a immature Summer Tanager. Glad you and Bob are enjoying yourselves in the hot weather - here our high yesterday was 72; the warmest so far...

    1. Hi Keith and Brenda,
Nice to hear from you! Did you swim at Blanco?

The lemon meringue pie sounds awesome. The locals recommended the 9-pin bowling alley cafe to us but we never made it there, We'll have to put it on the list for next time!

  4. I am so sorry I missed your comment post while we were at Canyon Lake. While I had Internet at Lake Pointe RV Resort, I also had two kids and three grandkids plus 4 dogs to keep me busy and off the Internet. Potters Creek COE is the COE you would want to stay at while at Canyon Lake because they have electric and water. The other choice with hookups is Cranes Mill COE on the south side of the lake. The campgrounds are almost always full on Saturday and Sunday so they don't allow drive-throughs then although if I had been staying there, you would have been allowed to visit me. It's not so friendly for people who would like to drive through but it helps keep the traffic down for those that are camping. I took Steve for a drive through on Monday as he had never been there. You should have stopped to visit us at Lake Pointe.

  5. Just getting caught up on my blog reading, sounds like you had a good time doing all of your volksmarching. Love the TX state parks we've been in and looking forward to more this winter, too bad about the unpleasant person at the COE and their silly policy.
