B&B: Inn at Chachalaca Bend, Part 2 - Sunday, May 29, 2016

Continued from earlier today...

When Bob was researching where to stay on our one night away from the 5th wheel, he was looking for a motel on South Padre Island. The rates on the cheapest rooms were $250 to $400 per night. I suggested we look for a B&B which is NOT on South Padre Island. The Inn at Chachalaca Bend stood out because it was relatively close to South Padre Island and Brownsville, both places we wanted to explore on our weekend. The price was almost half that of the places on South Padre Island, and ours would include a yummy breakfast!

The B&B especially appealed to me because they cater to birders. Plus I love being out in the country with peace and quiet (well, except for very noisy chachalacas!). The B&B turned out to be a real gem. It is located on a resaca. When an oxbow in a river gets pinched off by land, the remaining pond or lake is called a resaca. There are many resacas in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The water is usually surrounded by palm or other trees. We were very impressed by this place. Judge for yourselves.

We saw the lizard below out on the patio. He's gorgeous. Caught him just before he took off running.

After checking into the B&B, we changed clothes and Barbie, who checked us into the B&B, gave us a recommendation of a restaurant called Pirates Landing in Port Isabel just before the causeway that crossed over to South Padre Island. She warned us not to go over to South Padre Island because people had been reporting two hour waits to leave the island via the one bridge. More on that later.

I'm going to leave you here for now and will make this a three-part Sunday blog. To be continued...

  1. Thought about you today. There is a Volksmarch this weekend to the top of the Crazy Horse memorial. Looks like you're having a great time. So much to see so little time!

  2. I think you made a really great choice. Peace and quiet and great birding are a great combination.
