Driving -- Thurs., Apr. 4

Driving and playing tour guide, pointing out sites, Lake Mead
National Recreation Area.
I love to drive. It's a good thing because we've chosen full-time RVing as our lifestyle. Yes, that means we LIVE in our 5th wheel trailer. In October 2011 we sold our home in Hawaii and made the decision to travel the United States. We do not have the means to retire, so we "workamp," which basically means we work and camp. But that's another topic.

Throughout my life I've enjoyed a good road trip with tunes crankin' on the radio. A favorite is Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream."
"It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down
I had the radio on, I was a drivin'.
Trees flew by, me and Del were singin'
Little Runaway, I was flyin'.

"Yeah, runnin' down a dream
That never would come to me
Workin' on a mystery, goin' wherever it leads,
Runnin' down a dream.

"I felt so good like anything was possible
Hit cruise control and rubbed my eyes..."
Tom Petty captures the feeling of a road trip.

"I felt so good like anything was possible"... When I drive, I look at the scenery, listen to music, sing along, and contemplate life. Driving is good therapy, that's when I have time to review my life and where it has taken me.

There are some people, Bob included, who happily listen to books on tape while driving. Not so for me. I can't concentrate on a book...my mind is fully engaged watching the road, keeping an eye on other drivers and thinking. I guess that's when my mind finds time to solve all of life's mysteries ("workin' on a mystery").

I interpret "Runnin' down a dream" to mean exploring the country, having freedom to meander or stop wherever/whenever we want, meeting friends and relatives along the way, finding interesting history, places and hidden gems.

One of these days maybe you'll see me "Rockin' Down the Highway." (Doobie Brothers)

Travel Bug wishing she was driving off into the sunset.

  1. When someone asks Craig what we are going to do he answers "we will drive off into the sunRISE, because here in California, driving into the sunSet would be a very short trip.

Good to see all is healed and you are feeling so good.

    1. Good point. I think I watched too many Westerns as a kid when, at the end, they "rode off into the sunset."

  2. I hear ya on the tunes while on a road trip. Nothing better than cruising the highway with the music turned up to "blow out the windows" level sometimes! Went out to my surgeon appointment and it was one of those days I could have hit the interstate and logged some serious miles.

    1. You betcha. How about "I Can't Drive 55"? In Texas most highway speed limits are 60-80!! Heck, even some back roads are 70 mph. My kind of state.

  3. Kevin and I are just the opposite. Driving is like a Zen experience for him. I would much rather be listening to a book and playing a game on my tablet.

    1. Everyone experiences life differently. Bob just loves books on tape. If he puts one in while we're going somewhere together, I may listen for five minutes or so, but then I get distracted and lose the story line. My mind is usually off someplace else, not listening to the story.

    2. Kevin says that too about listening to books, so I usually listen to them on my ipod. It's a win-win for both of us. :)

  4. I like to drive too. Always thought I would of made a good truck driver. Although my husband doesn't like me driving our motor-home. I'm not comfortable driving it as well, especially in urban traffic.

Good post - I enjoyed it. We lived in our RV for 4 years. Fun times.

    1. Driving an RV in urban traffic is not fun. One time we drove through Reno at rush hour and I nearly had a heart attack when speedy import cars wedged themselves between us and all the cars ahead slamming on their brakes. I definitely had to take some deep breaths!

So you're not living in your RV now?

  5. I agree that there's nothing like a roadtrip with a great soundtrack. Driving and singing while letting your mind wander can be so peaceful!

    1. Peri,
Did you make it out of San Marcos this week? If so, where are you now? When are you going to start blogging again? I miss your posts.

  7. I like audio books but mostly I love to watch the scenery go by.

  8. I drove today! Followed Steve from Williams Arizona to Cortez Colorado. We don't usually drive long stretches but when we do I enjoy listening to my music and watching the scenery pass. Today it was the 50's. Being alone I can sing to my heart"s content.

    1. That sounds like a long distance you drove today. Do you drive often? I've only driven a few times.

Off on your new workamping assignment, eh? (I sound like a Canadian.)

Have a good time in Colorado. Maybe one of these days our paths will cross and we can do some walking/hiking.
