Travel -- Tues., Oct. 2

If it has to do with travel, I'm so there. Travel is my passion. I love to talk about it, do it, sell it. Yep, you heard me right. Sell it.

For six years I worked at AAA (American Automobile Association) as a Travel Counselor and Trainer of Travel Counselors. The job was fun. I talked to people all day about travel. If you know anything about AAA, you may have seen their TripTiks in the past, individualized travel routing in a flip book with a certain number of miles on each page with points of interest shown. In addition to helping people create their personalized routes, I also made hotel, campground, Disney package, and attraction reservations. I was not a full-fledged travel agent, so no airfare or cruises booked, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Auto Travel side of the business. Another lady and I were the Travel Counselor Trainers for all Travel Counselors in the state of Oregon. That was also fun.

For six months I also worked selling bus, helicopter, volcano, and nature tours at a small travel agency in Honolulu.

But I digress. Bob was talking to someone from Express Personnel in the course of his busy day. He happened to mention that I have worked in the travel industry. She asked him to have me call her. This afternoon I talked to her. She wants to meet me and discuss a part-time position she has in her travel agency. She doesn't book much airfare, mostly cruises and vacation tour packages.

I told her about my recent fall and jaw being wired shut. Can you believe it? Seven years ago she fell and broke her face and her jaw was wired shut for six weeks. She said to me, "It was the worst time in my life." Where have I heard that before? Ding, ding, ding...I just said that this past week.

Anyway, long story short, she wants to meet me to discuss a part-time job that would start in January! You just never know what might happen.

Bob and Vicky of Cedar Creekin! and Sandy (no blog given): Welcome to our blog. We hope you enjoy sharing our journey.

Travel Bug out.

    1. It will depend on flexibility to travel, but she did mention working remotely. Could be a good fit.

  6. I often wonder how travel agents are fairing with most flights being booked online.

A friend had a job at her local bank. They had a program called Senior savers, or something like that. The seniors put money into an account that was then used for travel tours. Her job was to arrange the tour and go along as host. She was getting the trip for free AND bring paid while on it. She even booked a tour to Alaska and her husband went along. Only cost of them was his meal costs. Not a bad job, I say.

Good luck in this new opportunity.

    1. That sounds like a fun job too!

One of the perks of travel jobs is the ability to take familiarization (fam) trips. At AAA, I was able to go on three of them over six years: (1) Vancouver, BC, Victoria, BC, Port Alberni, the west coast of Vancouver Island (Ucluelet to Tofino), Strathcona Provincial Park, then across to the Sunshine Coast and back to Vancouver; (2) Salt Lake City, UT, Logan, UT, Pocatello, ID, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, Pinedale, WY, Rock Springs, WY, Vernal, UT, Dinosaur National Monument and back to Salt Lake City; (3) Calgary, AB, Canadian Rockies in winter which included skiing at Banff, Sunshine and Jasper; we stayed at Chateau Lake Louise and got to ice skate on frozen Lake Louise and we stayed at Jasper Park Lodge, then on to the Edmonton Mall and back to Calgary. Fam trips are free to travel agents and sponsored by local Chambers of Commerce and Visitors Bureaus to let travel agents experience the hotels, restaurants and attractions of different areas so we can sell them better.

      Cheers to that!

  7. Well, we might say this is your reward for a terrible time! Oh, but no one should have such a terrible time. Ever! So we just hope this works great for you and that the terrible time ends quickly. Be well and safe travels, Ann and Jerry

    1. Yes, well...stuff happens, good and bad.

I will heal in time, mentally and physically. But I feel it's best to have a positive attitude to help my body heal. Lots of rest is a good thing too.
