Seney National Wildlife Refuge, Germfask, MI - Tues., Oct. 7, 2014

Our drive today from Munising to Germfask, Michigan took us two hours. The roads were basically empty and beautiful roads for driving.

We chose Big Cedar Campground in Germfask because it was ten miles from Curtis, Michigan, a place I spent two fun summers when I was ten and 12 years old.  My grandmother had a summer cabin on Manistique Lake. My love for fishing grew exponentially during those summers catching nightcrawlers for bait, setting minnow traps (also for bait), then fishing for and catching some of Michigan's best fighting fish: walleyes and Northern pike. I remember getting my picture taken holding up a stringer filled with large fish. I also spent lots of time on an inner tube riding the waves to shore. Wonderful memories.

After we set up our 5th wheel in the campground, we headed north to Seney National Wildlife Refuge. There is a nice Visitor Center, a 1-1/2 mile Nature Trail, and a seven-mile driving loop. We did all three.

After the Wildlife Refuge, we drove to Curtis to see if we could find grandma's old summer cabin, but no luck. I guess 50 years since you've been to a place makes it difficult to remember where the cabin was. I'm sure the town has changed a bit too.

Lucky for us, there was a nice laundromat in Curtis, so we schlepped all our dirty laundry with us. We were able to do seven loads of laundry quickly. (Our campground had a laundry room with one washer and one dryer. That would have taken a looooonnng time to do seven loads of laundry!)

It was fun driving around Curtis searching for the cabin. I was able to get a couple of photos of Manistique Lake on our quest.

After our laundry and exploration we spent the rest of the evening in the 5er huddled around our heater vents to get warm. It was about 40 degrees outside.

Forecast for tomorrow is 40% chance of rain. We will be driving to Tahquamenon Falls to see the Upper and Lower Falls.

That's all for today. Travel Bug out.

  1. I hate trying to put a comment in here, never know if I am doing it twice. Hi Susan, Frank here. Grandma's cabin was on South Manistique Lake on Long Point Rd. It was on the finger that sticks out into the lake. Sorry you couldn't find it. I hoping you could get a picture of it, (if it is still there) Love you

  2. Maybe you can find it on Google Earth? At least be able to see it from the sky view....
