Catching Up On A Few Days' Worth of Activities, Part 2 - Friday, August 7, 2020

Continued from Part 1...

Subtitled: The Cat, the Gopher, and the Deer.

As promised, Bob was back to the 5th wheel in time for our date to walk the Gig Harbor 10k Volksmarch. It was sunny and warm when we started walking. There wasn't much shade, but we did walk in it when we found it.

Three days ago, Diane and I did this same walk. We saw most of the same things, with a few exceptions.

Marina and Mt. Rainier in Gig Harbor, Washington.

We walked around three sides of Gig Harbor's protected marina. There are lots of nice restaurants, parks, viewpoints, and shops. A central meeting place seems to be the Jerisich Public Dock. There's a building by the street with picnic tables on the roof that provide an excellent view of the protected harbor. In the Skansie Brothers Park next door, a Farmer's Market is held on Thursday afternoons in the summer.

Colorful sculling boats are stored near Skansie Brothers Park.

Sculls.

We went around Donkey Creek Park, along the water, through nice neighborhoods, and admired the totem in the City of Gig Harbor's Crescent Creek Park. The totem had much better lighting this afternoon than it did a couple of mornings ago. Jeff Samudosky is the totem's sculptor.

A beautifully carved bench in Donkey Creek Park.

The otters, kelp, coho salmon, eagle,
and owl are easily visible.
Here are the sea lion, eagles, and owls.

Also in the park:

Another view of the WPA picnic shelter.

Human impact on fish habitat.

After the park, we walked down Randall Dr. NW to the public boat dock. That's when we saw the darndest thing. It wasn't unusual to see a deer in the neighborhood chowing down on the grasses. What was unusual was a grey and white cat running down the hill toward the deer with a dead gopher dangling from its mouth. The deer looked like it was expecting the cat as if they grew up together and meeting here every afternoon was old hat.

The Cat, the gopher, and the deer.

The deer watched the cat run down the hill, bound through the grass in front of her, and continue on down the next street. Then the deer bounced off after the cat. The cat actually put up her tail as she ran as if she were a white-tailed deer. It made me wonder if the cat was a stray who grew up around the deer. The cat was on such a mission, I gathered that she had growing kittens to feed. What an interesting moment.

Early Downtown Gig Harbor history.

Just like yesterday, the wind kicked up, the sky got cloudy, and the temperature dropped. Lucky for us, it didn't rain. There still was not a good view of Mt. Rainier. We finished our walk.

The end.
